LAB TEST - Swab Tests for Infections
These are culture tests for the ears, throat and wounds to determine infections in these specific areas.
An ear drainage culture is collected by placing a cotton swab gently in the ear canal. The sample is tested to isolate and identify the type of organism causing the ear infection.
A throat swab culture is a test commonly used to diagnose bacterial infections in the throat. These infections can include strep throat, pneumonia, tonsillitis, whooping cough, and meningitis.
A wound swab culture will usually identify the bacterial species of the infection, and help to decide the appropriate therapy.
